Oregon Supreme Court
Aldridge v. Tussing, S072780 (Or.) — mandamus petition and supporting documents struck, proceeding dismissed
Sanctioned · 4 June 2026
What was fabricated
Legal authorities and quotations. The fetched summary of the order has the court saying the relators' supporting memoranda 'appeared to include citations to cases that do not exist' and quotations not found in the cited cases; that their 16 April 2026 declaration, filed under penalty of perjury, cited at least four cases the court says do not exist in the Oregon Appellate Reports or Oregon Reports; and that the relators attributed the errors to a generative AI service called LegalAI while also saying they relied at least in part on Google Scholar. The owner is to confirm the exact wording from the order.
What happened as a result
Order of 4 June 2026: the court struck the relators' amended petition for writ of mandamus and supporting documents (Docket Entry No. 5) and their response to the order to show cause (Docket Entry 17); dismissed the proceeding; dismissed as moot their motions for a stay, for leave to file a supplemental memorandum and for administrative intervention; designated the adverse party the prevailing party with no costs allowed. The order says repeated conduct, especially in response to a show cause order, 'warrants imposition of a meaningful sanction'; NO DOLLAR AMOUNT, FINE OR OTHER NAMED SANCTION APPEARS IN THE ORDER AS READ. The OPB article's report of a $500 fine in this matter is not borne out by the order; the $500 is in the Witkin order.
